dr. erik holmgren

Dr. Erik Holmgren oversees the Mass Cultural Council's work in advancing the arts and culture in Massachusetts through sustainable partnerships across the public and private sectors in the Commonwealth, along with co-leading the agency’s groundbreaking work in the social prescription of arts experiences. Prior to his work at the Council, Dr. Holmgren was a concert saxophonist, performing with a diverse group of organizations from the United States Military Academy Band at West Point to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He has been on faculty at Frostburg State University and Columbia University, has been a guest lecturer at eight other colleges and universities, and has been invited to speak at more than a dozen conferences. His writing has been published in music and business magazines and his peer-reviewed work has appeared in the Journal of Research in Music Performance and most recently, in Youth Development as Music Learning, a new book published by Routledge. He holds five degrees in music and education and is the founder of Musical Perspectives, one of the first online journals focusing on scholarship in music performance.
